The M3 was Leitz's 1954 replacement for the screw-mount Leicas, designed by Heinrich Janke around a new bayonet mount and a 0.91x finder that brings up 50, 90 and 135mm framelines automatically over a 68.5mm rangefinder base. Chrome accounts for nearly all of the 233,209 M3 numbers assigned up to 1966; only 1,320 bodies were finished in black paint. Double stroke cameras like this one were built until 1958, when Leitz went over to a single stroke advance.
