Leitz put the 90mm f/4 Elmar into M bayonet with the launch of the M3 in 1954 and kept it in the catalogue until 1968, fewer than 79,605 serial numbers covering both the bayonet and the screw versions. The optics are four elements in three groups in a clear-anodised aluminium barrel focusing to 1m. It is the light, moderate-speed alternative to the 90mm Summicron and Elmarit, well corrected and easy to focus accurately, and it balances neatly on an M body.
