The Leica II (Model D) black paint, introduced in 1932, represents a pivotal evolution in 35mm photography as the first Leica with integrated rangefinder coupled to the lens. This example features the classic 39mm screw mount and houses the renowned Leitz Elmar 50mm f/3.5 lens, a 4-element 3-group Tessar-type anastigmat derived from Max Berek’s 1920 design. Renowned for its compact rigidity and exceptional sharpness even at full aperture, only a limited number of black-paint Model D bodies were produced before the shift to chrome finishes, making well-preserved A- examples increasingly scarce.
