Leitz introduced the M2 in 1957 as the reporter's counterpart to the M3, dropping the finder magnification to 0.72x so that 35mm brightlines could be carried for the first time in a Leica rangefinder, alongside 50 and 90mm. Chrome bodies account for nearly all of the roughly 85,000 M2s built up to 1968. This is the form catalogued by Leitz as 10300, the body supplied without the self-timer; only about 5,900 M2s were fitted with one.
