Leitz introduced the 50mm f/1 Noctilux-M in 1976 as successor to the aspherical f/1.2, Walter Mandler and Gerhardt Bechmann reaching a full stop faster using seven spherical elements in six groups and high-refractive-index glass. The first version takes E58 filters and a separate clamp-on hood, weighs about 580g and focuses to 1m, with half and full click stops running to f/16. Around 4,000 first-version lenses were built, against 17,535 f/1 Noctiluxes across the whole 1976 to 2008 run.
