The double-aspherical Noctilux 50mm f/1.2 was made at Wetzlar between 1966 and 1975 under order number 11820. Six elements in four groups include two aspherical surfaces, ground by hand on one purpose-built machine by one operator, which is why the run stayed small and why Leitz replaced it with the spherical f/1 in 1976. Wide open it gives strongly modelled highlights and a rapid fall-off into the background; a 16-blade diaphragm covers f/1.2 to f/16. Reported totals run from about 1,757 to 2,450.
