Angenieux patented the Retrofocus in 1950, pushing the rear nodal point back so a wide angle could clear a reflex mirror, and the 28mm f/3.5 Type R11 followed in 1952; the trade name became the generic term for the whole class of lens. Six elements in six groups, made in France. The Leica screw version is rangefinder coupled and was built in far smaller numbers than the reflex fittings, early barrels taking 56.5mm filters and later ones 58.5mm.
