The Summar was Leitz's first f/2 standard lens for the Leica, six elements in four groups, introduced in 1933 under the order code SUMAR. It appeared first in this rigid nickel-plated barrel, of which only around 2,000 were built before the collapsible mount took over in 1934 and carried Summar production to fewer than 128,000 lenses by 1940. Wide open it is soft and low in contrast with pronounced falloff, tightening quickly by f/4; the rigid version is by far the scarcer of the two.
