Leitz's first 35mm Summicron, in production from 1958, used eight elements in six groups, an unusually complex answer to wide-angle correction for a rangefinder and the source of its reputation. Silver chrome over brass was the standard finish and black examples are rare. Bayonet output ran to 21,492 lenses by 1969, alongside 577 in screw mount. The sixteen-blade diaphragm covers f/2 to f/16, filters are E39 and close focus is 0.7m. Chrome barrels weigh noticeably more than the alloy Summicrons that followed.
