Leica's modern reissue of the 1935 Thambar, order number 11697, brings a deliberately under-corrected soft focus portrait lens back to the M bayonet at f/2.2. As on the original, spherical aberration is left uncorrected so a sharp core sits within a glowing halo, and the barrel carries twin aperture scales for use with and without the removable centre spot filter that intensifies the effect. The screw-mount original ran to fewer than 3,500 lenses between the mid-1930s and 1942, making it one of the rarest Leitz optics.
