Angenieux introduced the Retrofocus Type R1 in 1950, and the trade name it coined became the general term for the design: a negative group ahead of the main assembly pushes the rear node forward, clearing the mirror box and making genuine wide angles possible on reflex cameras for the first time. Most R1s were built for Exakta and M42 reflexes, so the rangefinder-coupled Leica screw version is much the less common. It is compact, gentle in contrast and unmistakably French in its rendering.
