The Thambar is Leitz's soft-focus portrait lens for screw-mount Leicas, four elements in three groups, catalogued under the order code TOODY, short for Weichzeichner, the German term for a soft-focus device. Spherical aberration is left deliberately uncorrected, so highlights bloom outward while the plane of focus stays readable. A centre-spot filter masks the middle of the aperture to deepen the effect, which is why the diaphragm carries separate red and black scales for use with and without it. Sources put production at roughly 2,900 to 3,500 lenses.
