The Leica III was the first screw-mount Leica with slow speeds, adding an escapement that carries the shutter from 1/20 down to a full second on a second dial on the front of the body. It also brought a 1.5x rangefinder with a dioptre correction lever and, for the first time, strap lugs. Leitz built about 76,500 between 1933 and 1939, of which some 27,400 were black lacquer over brass with nickel-plated fittings, against roughly 49,100 finished in chrome.
