Leitz assigned 93,221 M2 serial numbers between 1957 and 1968, of which black paint accounts for 1,851 by one count and 1,871 by another. They were delivered in small batches, several of only 200 to 300 cameras, the first being 500 in December 1958. The paint lies over brass, so wear shows yellow metal rather than bright alloy. Otherwise it is a standard M2: 0.72x finder with 35, 50 and 90mm brightlines, the first Leica rangefinder to carry a 35mm frame.
