The Leica R5 black is a 1987 manual-focus 35mm SLR with electronically controlled shutter speeds from 1/2000s to 1/2s plus stepless automatic exposure modes. It employs a mechanical horizontal cloth focal-plane shutter offering 1/100s flash sync and full manual override. Built on the R4 chassis with improved electronics and viewfinder information display, approximately 14,500 black R5 bodies were produced between 1987 and 1992, making the plain-black version significantly rarer than the R5 chrome.
