When Teikoku Kogaku released the Zunow 50mm f/1.1 in 1953 it was the fastest lens available for any 35mm camera, three years ahead of Nikon's f/1.1 answer. The first version used nine elements in five groups, revised in 1955 to eight in five, and it was supplied in Leica screw as well as Contax and Nikon rangefinder mounts. Wide open it is soft and luminous with strong vignetting, firming up markedly on stopping down. Surviving examples are increasingly scarce.
