Leitz assigned 60,691 M4 serial numbers between 1967 and 1975, of which black lacquer accounts for 4,889 against 47,522 chrome and 6,775 black chrome. Lacquer is the finish that wears through to brass, and it gave way to black chrome part-way through the run, which is why relatively few survive in original paint. The M4 itself is the practical M: 0.72x finder with 35, 50, 90 and 135mm frames, the angled rapid-load take-up spool and the hinged crank rewind.
