The M4 is the last of the classic Wetzlar M bodies, designed by Heinrich Janke and Hans-Kurt Uellenberg, its finder carrying 35, 50, 90 and 135mm framelines. Leitz assigned about 60,691 M4 serial numbers between 1967 and 1975, of which roughly 47,522 were chrome, making silver chrome much the commonest finish and mechanically identical to the black lacquer and black chrome bodies. Chrome plating over the top plate also survives handling far better than paint does.
