The Leica M5 black (1971–1975) is the first Leica M rangefinder to incorporate through-the-lens CdS metering. Built in Wetzlar with factory code 105, it employs a mechanical cloth focal-plane shutter with speeds from 1/2 to 1/1000 s plus B. The 0.72× viewfinder/rangefinder retains the classic 35/50/90/135 mm framelines. Only 9,700 black-paint units were produced, making this the rarest standard-production M5 variant.
