The M5 was the first Leica M with through-the-lens metering, its CdS cell carried on a swinging arm that drops in front of the shutter and retracts as the film is wound. Leitz assigned 33,420 M5 serial numbers between 1971 and 1975, of which roughly 23,150 went to black bodies and 10,270 to silver chrome. The body is larger than an M4, with a 68.5mm rangefinder base, shutter speeds of 1/2 to 1/1000 plus B, and metering across 21 steps.
