The M5 was Leica's first M with through-the-lens metering, a CdS cell on a swinging arm that reads off the film plane, and the only one built to this larger shape, with shutter speeds from 1/2 to 1/1000s plus B, a 68.5mm rangefinder base and a meter working down to 30 seconds. Black bodies account for 23,150 of the 33,420 serial numbers assigned. The three-lug arrangement is the later of the two designs, allowing horizontal or vertical carrying.
