Leica's first metered M, the M5 reads through the lens from a CdS cell on a swinging arm that withdraws as the shutter fires. Of the 33,420 serial numbers assigned between 1971 and 1975, only about 10,270 went to silver chrome bodies against 23,150 in black, so chrome is the harder finish to find. This is the later three-lug body, whose additional strap lug on the end plate allows the camera to be carried horizontally rather than hanging vertically as the early two-lug cameras do.
