The M7 arrived in 2001 as Leica's first M with aperture-priority automatic exposure, its electronically timed shutter running continuously from 32 seconds to 1/1000 with mechanical 1/60 and 1/125 held in reserve, alongside DX coding and TTL flash. The Japanese-market version carries the old Leica script engraved into the top plate in place of the red dot on the front, which is the reason it is sought out; underneath it is an ordinary black 0.72x body from the earliest years of production.
