The fourth-generation 35mm Summicron was made from 1979 to 1999, 52,993 lenses in all, first at Ernst Leitz Canada and later in Germany; this is a German-made black example. The optics are Walter Mandler's seven elements in five groups, f/2 to f/16 on a ten-blade diaphragm, E39 filters, 0.7m close focus, about 160g in a 26 by 52mm barrel. Collectors call it the King of Bokeh for backgrounds that stay quiet rather than nervous behind a sharply drawn subject.
