The first 35mm Summilux, roughly 6,400 lenses built in the first half of the 1960s, is the one collectors call the Steel Rim after the polished stainless ring around its front. Walter Mandler and Erich Wagner drew the seven-element, five-group optic, patented in 1958. This is the plain M-bayonet form for the M2 and later bodies, without the spectacle attachment of the M3 version, focusing to 1m on E41 filters. It is the softest and most atmospheric of all the 35mm Summiluxes.
