The 50mm Summilux arrived in 1959 to replace the Summarit, a seven element, five group design by Walter Mandler and Erich Wagner patented in August 1958. This first version was built only until 1961 and came to fewer than 19,600 lenses, which makes it far scarcer than the second version that followed it for thirty years. It focuses to one metre and takes E43 screw-in or A45 slip-on filters; the chrome finish brings it to about 360 grams. Wide open it draws with a soft, luminous glow.
