Wartime and immediate post-war shortages cut E. Leitz New York off from Wetzlar optics, so around 1945 to 1948 the company mounted Wollensak Velostigmat 50mm f/3.5 glass in Leitz screw barrels of Elmar form for the American market. It fits any 39mm screw Leica and, with an adapter, M bodies. The rendering is period-correct rather than clinical, with modest contrast and a soft falloff into the background. Leitz New York lenses were made in small numbers and are among the more interesting screw-mount oddities.
