Rudolf Ruehl designed the first Elmarit-R 28mm f/2.8 in 1970, eight elements in eight groups, focusing to 0.3 m and using Series 7 filters held by the hood. It stayed in the catalogue to 1992 in 2-cam, 3-cam and R-only mounts, with fewer than 50,510 lenses recorded. Prototype and pre-series lenses were built alongside the reflex programme and were never catalogued; they carry factory numbering outside the normal blocks and reach the market only occasionally.
