The first version of the 50mm f/1 Noctilux-M, in production from 1976, is identified by its E58 filter thread and separate clamp-on hood; later versions moved to E60 and finally to a built-in shade. Walter Mandler and Gerhardt Bechmann reached f/1 with seven elements in six groups and no aspherical surfaces at all, using high-refractive-index glass instead. It focuses to 1m and weighs about 580g, lighter than the later barrels. Roughly 4,000 first-version lenses were made out of 17,535 f/1 Noctiluxes.
