Introduced in 1953, the first Summicron is a collapsible seven element, six group f/2 standard lens, catalogued as SOOIC in Leica screw mount until 1960. Leitz used rare-earth glass in early production, lanthanum and in some batches Chance Brothers thorium, for its high refractive index and low dispersion. Those elements darken to a warm yellow over the decades, an effect that clears with prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV. It remains the lens most closely associated with a classic screw-mount Leica outfit.
