The Summicron name arrived in 1953 on the 50mm f/2, a seven-element design by Gustav Kleinberg and Otto Zimmermann that used new rare-earth glasses to lift resolution and contrast well beyond the Summitar it replaced. It ran through collapsible, rigid and dual-range barrels until 1968, all sharing an E39 filter thread, a ten-blade diaphragm and one-metre focusing, before the 1969 redesign brought a six-element formula and 0.7m focusing. It remains the reference against which Leitz normal lenses are measured.
